In this article, I'll explain how to clean
brass handles . Brass is not a pure material but an alloy of zinc and copper that was already used in ancient times for braziers and jugs and for other objects of common use.
Brass handles are widely used because, compared to other materials, because it is very resistant to corrosion and has a long life. But it has a flaw,
it oxidizes . To restore its ancient splendor, you need to use the right products because, despite the resistance, the wrong detergent can irreparably ruin your handle.
The two solutions, generalist but not obvious, are:
- go to a specialized shop, such as a well-stocked hardware store or a DIY store and buy a specific product for cleaning brass,
- or you can choose a natural product made by you at home. Without spending a lot of money and an ecological choice.
To clean the brass of your handles, you can prepare different natural blends at home:
- with Marseille soap flakes : fill a basin with hot water and put the Marseille soap flakes in it, when the mixture is ready, dip a soft sponge and gently clean your handles.
- Hot water and baking soda : you have to mix them together to create a cream that you will leave on your handles for about ten minutes. Rinse with hot water and lemon and dry them with an antistatic cloth.
- Lemon juice and vinegar: mix lemon juice and vinegar in a bowl, then with a sponge or a soft soaked cloth you can remove dust or traces of oxidation from your handles.
To remove
grease stains from your brass handles instead, you can pour 2 or 3 drops of dish soap on a damp cloth and rub gently on your handles.
How to sanitize brass handles
Also to sanitize you can prepare a mixture at home:
- To sanitize without removing stains, prepare a solution of hot water and white vinegar. Leave the solution on the handles for a few minutes and then pat dry with a clean cloth.
- If, on the other hand, you want to sanitize and clean a dirty handle, soak some cotton with alcohol and then, to remove any residue, wipe it with a cloth soaked in red wine. Finally, if you have oxidized brass handles, pass some yogurt over them.
After cleaning and disinfecting, you can always proceed with
polishing with do-it-yourself remedies.
I advise you, before proceeding with the polishing, to put paper tape around the handle so you will not dirty the door.
There are two methods, both natural and very effective, to polish brass handles:
- lemon juice, salt, vinegar and baking soda : create a paste with these ingredients, cover the handles for about ten minutes and then rinse with warm water and neutral soap.
- linseed oil : wipe the brass handles with a cloth soaked in oil to create a patina that will keep them shiny and clean over time. This solution is also great for oxidation and black spots.
