Keep Lupine away with passive safety systems

What is meant by "passive safety"? What are the different passive home security systems? Get ready to read a nice list of anti-intrusion methods to keep more or less equipped thieves at bay.

passive safety systems

Let's clarify one thing immediately: here you will not find DIY anti-intrusion methods, "MacGyver style" . Those may work in TV series but here we are talking about real life. And in real life, we can do many things to improve the security of our home. But only if we use professional systems and if we understand when it is appropriate to ask for the help of professionals to install them correctly.

That said, let's move on to the focus of this article: passive safety systems . Let's get to know them.

What are passive safety systems

With this expression we mean methods and tools that break the eggs in the basket for thieves (enough to convince them to desist) and that do not require the installation of systems , such as burglar alarms or surveillance cameras.

The latter are considered active safety systems. A super safe home, in our opinion, should integrate passive and active systems. The investment - let's face it - is there, but remember that you can put in one brick at a time. If you want to start with passive systems, below I have made a selection of products to keep “Arsenio Lupine” level thieves at bay.

Security systems for doors and windows

Let's start with doors and windows, the two intrusion gates par excellence (provided that "your" thieves are not particularly original). As for the doors, we already know that the armored ones are the best in terms of security - we will see together various systems that make them burglar-proof. And the windows? How to make them anti-malicious? From glass to locking systems for shutters, we will see different solutions.

Armored doors: you can't go through here!

Armored doors are safe by definition. But are there “more armored” doors than others? The topic, as you may already imagine, is very broad (and maybe we will do more in other ad hoc articles). For now I thought it might be useful to talk about safe locks for armored doors.

1. A great European cylinder lock with a great defender

To make your security door lock more massive you can install a European cylinder lock and a defender to protect the cylinder. But which ones? The models and brands are many and it is easy to get lost in the technical details. What I recommend is to make sure that your European cylinder lock has at least these three characteristics:
  • anti-bumping;
  • anti-manipulation;
  • frictioned.

And the defender? Let it be at least:
  • anti-tear / anti-extraction;
  • with cone shape;
  • with magnetic closure.

I specify that you do not have to change the whole lock to install the defender and that this security tool is applicable to both European cylinder locks and double-bit locks (the most common locks for armored doors).

2. The digital lock for armored doors: technological security

With this solution you eliminate the risk of key duplication and increase security because there is no classic lock to pick. Here, too, the choice is wide so, instead of going into descriptions full of technicalities, I find it easier and more useful to inform you about the systems that I think are safer and more practical (and that you can also buy here on Windowo):
Apart from the locks, what else can be done to raise the level of “you can't go here!”? You can install other accessories such as a safety hook for an armored door, which is an opening limiter.

At this point we have already got a good basic culture on passive security systems, but we can do more to close the door in the face of thieves: let's open the "second half" of our article with window security systems.

Window protection: go retro, thief!

Ah, how much there would be to write here too! I will try to be concise and exhaustive, I promise. I have selected two (+1) solutions for you. Let's go in order and start from the outermost element, the shutters, and then get to the frame ... Come on, come on, I know you've already read a lot but the anti-intrusion mission needs your attention.

1. How to make your shutters anti-intrusion

anti-intrusion shutters with anti-burglary bar

On the market you will find models of shutters that are defined as "anti-intrusion" but beyond the type of shutters you have at home, with some precautions you can make them thief-proof. What precautions am I talking about?

Locking systems for shutters such as burglar- proof bars: on Windowo we have a model of the Blindy brand and one of the Giroblock brand, which are extendable and can be installed on shutters and shutters of windows and doors.

And now let's take a little leap into the actual frame.

2. Shatterproof glass: that is?

Do your windows have shatterproof glass? I tell you right away that you can only answer this question if you have the opportunity to look at the manufacturer's certifications. The term "shatterproof", in reality, is just a commercial expression. So how to go about it?

According to the UNI 7697 standard (safety criteria for glass applications), the anti-burglary performances are covered by laminated glass (UNI EN 12543-1) with UNI EN 356 certification (from the 1st level class P1 to the 8th level class P8A) . I know, these bureaucratic technicalities are not the best but, as they say, ambassador does not bring pain!
Are we done or not? Almost. Latest advice.

Can we do anything else? Yes, with anti-thief bollards

bollards for gutters and anti-thief balcony

I close this long focus on passive safety systems with bollards . What is it about? Of tools that, as the word itself says, dissuade thieves from coming to visit you. These "nice" tools are installed on external pipes, such as gutters, or on balconies (perhaps you got here by typing "anti-intrusion spikes for balconies").

The fearsome points of the bollards invite the thief to turn away because, in addition to constituting a physical obstacle, they could injure him. Can you install them yourself? Yes, just keep in mind the legal requirements (we talk about it in the data sheets of the various products).

So, then ... I opened by mentioning MacGyver, I close with a cinematic quote: do you remember the thousand ways that little Kevin came up with in the movie “Mom, I missed the plane”? Here: forget them. And it uses only professional passive safety systems. You can find some of the best on Windowo: right, MacGyver? : D
